Coffee cooperations for SMEs

Hände mit Kaffeebohnen
Die Initiative zeigt, wie Finanzinstitutionen als verbindendes Element zur Internationalisierung mittelständischer Geschäftsbeziehungen beitragen können.

The German Sparkassenstiftung for International Cooperation (DSIK) and Sparkasse Bremen connect Central American coffee producers with German importers. The initiative promotes transparent, deforestation-free supply chains, fosters partnerships, and creates new opportunities for SMEs in international business.

As part of the Partners in Transformation initiative, the DSIK and Sparkasse Bremen are collaborating closely to support local financial institutions in Mexico in their digital transformation. A particular focus lies on the targeted promotion of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), especially by connecting/creating networks among stakeholders along international value chains.

Building on this partnership, the German Sparkassenstiftung and Sparkasse Bremen jointly organized a specific matchmaking initiative in the coffee sector.

Coffee importers from Sparkasse Bremen’s client base are increasingly facing the challenge of meeting stricter regulatory requirements—particularly with regard to deforestation-free supply chains. For many companies, proving that products have been produced without deforestation involves considerable effort. At the same time, there is growing interest among German SME importers in working more closely and directly with producers in the countries of origin to improve transparency and traceability.

The initiative shows how financial institutions can act as a connecting force in the internationalization of SME business relationships.

Against this backdrop, the German Sparkassenstiftung developed a concept in collaboration with Sparkasse Bremen: building on existing contacts with coffee cooperatives in Central America—including those from previous value chain analyses—the foundation identified suitable producers and connected/matched them with interested German importers.

At the heart of the digital exchange format was not only dialogue on quality and supply chain requirements, but above all the concrete initiation of partnerships/In addition to discussions on quality and supply chain requirements, the digital exchange format focused primarily on the practical initiation of partnerships, supported by structured facilitation and expert guidance from both organizations. The format was complemented by contributions from the German Chamber of Commerce Abroad (AHK) Mexico, which shared its expertise on market conditions, financing opportunities, and sustainable development.

The initiative creates clear added value: it strengthens Sparkasse Bremen’s position as a financing partner for international business, opens up new opportunities for SMEs to develop more transparent and resilient supply chains, and helps producers gain direct access to potential buyers in Germany.
