In Zambia, a country in southern Africa, few young people have access to good training opportunities for technical professions. Many vocational schools there still lack modern equipment or industry-relevant curricula. This is a bottleneck that poses challenges for companies seeking qualified staff.

DEG Impulse is now using develoPPP funds to cofinance the construction of a new training centre for Liebherr Zambia Limited. In future, this centre will offer a comprehensive range of training courses for technical professions. Liebherr Zambia, a subsidiary of the Liebherr Group, supplies and maintains heavy construction and mining equipment and invests in qualified young talent, also with a view to expanding its business activities.

At the end of April 2026, the ground-breaking ceremony for the extension took place on the existing campus of the Fountain Gate Crafts and Trades School. Attendees included Niels Annen, State Secretary in the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, as well as representatives of the Zambian Government.
Plans include the development and launch of three dual training programmes in the fields of technology and mechanics, which will comprise practical training at Liebherr and also impart skills in green energy and sustainability, as well as up to twenty short-term training courses at the Fountain Gate Crafts and Trades School (FGCATS). To achieve this, modern, fully equipped training rooms are to be built on the FGCATS campus in Chongwe, east of Lusaka.

The project, which runs until December 2028, has a budget of around EUR 3.9 million. Fifty per cent of this is being provided under the develoPPP programme from funds of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), with Liebherr Zambia investing an equal amount.

In addition, the renovation of a student residence for women trainees on the FGCATS site is also being cofinanced, with the aim of making the programme more attractive to women applicants.
