German companies training skilled workers in Kenya

New prospects for skilled workers in Kenya
Demand for qualified skilled workers is growing steadily in Kenya – both in manufacturing and in the digital sector. At the same time, many young people do not have access to practical training opportunities that are aligned with the needs of the labour market.
DEG Impulse is therefore using develoPPP funding from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) to support two new projects by German companies aimed at specifically developing skills for the jobs of the future. The corresponding agreements were signed at the first German-Kenyan Business Day in Berlin.
Together with its Kenyan partner, INDEVO Africa, the German company Ensinger GmbH is establishing a CNC training and demonstration centre in Nairobi. CNC (computer numerical control) technologies are essential in modern manufacturing, and yet the supply of qualified skilled workers in this field is currently limited. The aim is for the new training centre to train more than 100 skilled workers and instructors in modern processing technologies over the next three years, thus strengthening the competitiveness of Kenya’s production sector.
Another project is being implemented by the Munich-based company getINNOtized GmbH, together with Azubi Africa. Its goal is to prepare young Kenyans for careers in the fields of cloud computing, data analysis and artificial intelligence. By combining training that is geared to the needs of the labour market, AI-supported careers guidance and targeted placements with employers, the project aims to provide training for 190 participants and place 160 young skilled workers in skilled employment.
Both of these projects show how German companies, together with local partners, can create sustainable training and employment opportunities. The projects are simultaneously strengthening economic cooperation between Germany and Kenya and fostering the development of urgently needed skilled workers in the country.
